October 2 - TU’s School of Art presents a lecture by artist Mel Chin at TU
Mel Chin’s work defies easy classification, it ranges from land reclamation projects, public art installations, film, video games, to gallery objects and appears in unlikely places such as industrial waste land, destroyed homes, even popular television programs. What all these projects share is the artist’s concern with ecology and his desire to provoke greater social and environmental awareness and responsibility. Time: 7:00 pm at the Univ. of Tulsa School of Art. For more info Call Dr. Michaela Merryday at 918.631.2739.

sustain:ABILITY lectures

Thursday, October 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  learn about “Teaching Sustain:ABILITY” in the panel discussion at the Bartlesville Public Library, Meeting Room A.  Representatives from three “progressive” architecture programs across the U.S., including Taliesin: The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, The Rural Studio at Auburn University, and the Yestermorrow Design/Build School, will discuss new approaches toward incorporating sustainable design topics in their curricula, as well as reflecting on those “tried-and-true” methods sometimes taken for granted.  This panel discussion we be of special interest to students interested in moving forward with their studies in ‘green’ design, as well as architecture firms looking to hire your designers trained in environmentally friendly design.  Fans of Frank Lloyd Wright and Sam Mockbee will also get the opportunity to hear how the design schools they founded are now reinterpreting their concepts on sustainable design.

Friday, November 7, 2008 from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. join the design forum themed “Sustainability 101” at Central Center at Centennial Park in Tulsa.  Developed in conjunction with the exhibition Imaginative Qualities of Actual Things, the Design Forum and will help frame ideas pertaining to sustainability in the real world using examples of the people driving the sustainable design movement.  Product displays will be combined with panel discussions including architects, manufacturers, and representatives from the USGBC, the Green Council and other organizations certifying sustainable products.  Other topics addressed include product development, consumer demand, cost issues, trends and advancing technologies.  This is a dialogue about how to overcome the challenges of developing a sustainable way of life from an architect’s, designer’s, and consumer’s point of view.
