Shin’en Kan: House of the Far Away Heart

February 10 – March 26, 2017

Pulling from the Price Tower’s archive, this exhibit features Goff’s original drawings, various items from the home, paintings, personal photos, 3D animations and a fully interactive reconstruction of the Shin’en Kan conversation pit.

A separate internalized world ” a place to return….where walking through its doors there can be left outside all remnants of conformity, the problems of the day and the expectations of society. This the creates: it is a new world-a created world” –  Bruce Goff

Shin’ en Kan stood as a unique work in itself. “it is seemingly without specific precedent and may be the most original design of Goff’s career” explains David G. Delong, the foremost scholar on the architects work. Shin’ en Kan was Goff’s largest and most luxurious house experimenting with materials such as onyx and gold leaf. Clear plastic cellophane strips hanged from the skylight, dime-store glass ashtrays were affixed to the windows for a kaleidoscope effect, walls were made from pieces of coal and blue glass cullet, and the ceiling was adorned with goose feathers. Tragically the house was lost to a fire in December of 1996, which was later thought to be by arson. Unfortunately, no arrests or convictions were made and Bartlesville lost one of its prized masterpieces. Price Tower was tasked to preserve the remaining building fragments, architectural drawings, photos, films, furniture, and paintings which once were homed by Shin’en Kan. Several of these items are on view in this upcoming exhibit.
